WHAT IS FAMILY SPONSORSHIP?

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

Canada, through immigration policies that support family unity, offers citizens and permanent residents the opportunity to bring close family members to Canada. The family sponsorship program is designed to ensure that family members can live together in Canada.

Who Falls Under the Scope of Family Sponsorship?
The following individuals can be brought to Canada under family sponsorship:

  • Spouse or legal partner

  • Unmarried children under the age of 22 (in some cases, children over 22 may also be included)

  • Mother and father

  • Grandmother and grandfather

  • Adopted children

In certain special cases, other relatives such as siblings or nieces/nephews

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR FAMILY SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION

  • The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Must commit to financially supporting the sponsored person

  • Must not have violated previous sponsorship obligations

 

Note: Spousal sponsorship is a subcategory of family sponsorship. However, the application type, conditions, and procedures may differ. For this reason, it is also addressed separately under the title below.

TWO TYPES OF SPOUSAL SPONSORSHIP APPLICATIONS

1. Outland Sponsorship

  • If your spouse lives outside Canada, this application type is appropriate.

  • You can reside outside Canada during the application process.

  • No travel restriction.

  • If the application is refused, there is a right to appeal.

  • This application type can only be made by Canadian citizens.

  • The spouse does not have the right to apply for a work permit during the application process.

 
2. Inland Sponsorship
​

  • If your spouse is in Canada, this application type may be preferred.

  • During the application process, your spouse can apply for an open work permit.

  • There is an obligation to reside in Canada during the application process.

  • Permanent residents can also make this application.

There is no right to appeal if rejected.

Application Eligibility Requirements

  • The relationship must be genuine and documentable

  • The sponsor must not have previously sponsored another spouse

  • The sponsor must commit to financially supporting their partner throughout the sponsorship period

  • Documents showing cohabitation must be submitted with inland applications

 

Points to Consider

  • Documents must be complete and consistent

  • Prove the authenticity of the relationship from different sources (photos, messages, cohabitation documents, etc.)

  • The letter of intent must be sincere, clear, and written in a planned manner

  • The partner must provide an invitation letter from Canada

  • Travel plans must be carefully arranged according to the type of application
